The debt and the insult

5 August 2008 No Comment

The beach deputy, the catalan nationalist Mr. Juan Puig, insulted, on his personal blog, to the people of the Extremadura Autonomic Region. This is coming after another insult, from Mr. Luis Suñé (member of ICV, the post-comunist party in Catalonia), who put on his personal blog an image of two tarnished and dirty children saying that “SOS Extremadura. Support a children for 1000 euros a month (See, on Spanish, the Hoy newspaper). The 8,7% of the Catalonian GDP is not enough”.

The message is simple: after the publication for the Spanish government of the “fiscal numbers”, that indicates the contribution of every Autonomic Region to the general balance. This was, of course, an old aspiration of the nationalists. But, although this indicates a clear contribution from Catalonia to the rest of regions in Spain, it is not complete. Why? Because they need to be complemented with the “commercial numbers”, which reflects the other side of the coin. Without that, any exercise claiming discrimination is a simple and pure exercise of hypocrisy.

Well, the thing is that taking into account this, the nationalists are thrown in whirlwind to the stemming of the weakest regions, doing an excercise of victims, arguing that they are giving more than thet are receiving. This is the real point, to use every chink for asking more: more money, more differentiation, more asking for freedom. And, as seeing recently, they are using everything: from new statutes of autonomy (where the financing aspects are almost the key), to more competencies, to more funding and… insults.

And the cornerstone here is … they are doing this because they feel, they are sure, that the Spanish government is weak, or the Spanish government, under the rule of Mr. Zapatero, will not do anything to control and stop these nationalists aspirations. Mr. Zapatero is weak for several reasons: he declared to accept anything will come from the Catalan government; he promoted the new Catalan Statute and, moreover, he will do anything for the power and those nationalists parties (on Galicia and Catalonia this is clear) are giving him and the PSOE power on both regions.

Again, Mr. Zapatero is showing his disability to govern Spain. To defend Spain. To defend the liberty in Spain. And this supposes going against the nationalisms.
